James Lamar Burgans, age 59, of the Henderson community of Pike County, Alabama, was called to
eternal rest Friday, March 5, 2021. A graveside service will be held Monday, March 8, 2021, at Henderson Memorial Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. with Reverend Andrew Smith officiating and Green Hills Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Hattaway, Lynn Gray, Paige Owens, Jason Smiley Dewayne Bundy, and Charlie Bundy. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Miller, Greg Baker, Dennis Riley, and Russell Thomas.
Here’s some of Lamar’s story from the beginning. He was born at home on Rutledge Loop in Luverne, Alabama, attended Luverne High School for a stint, and then went to work straightaway farming cattle, hogs, and Southern staple crops. He dedicated 40 years to his trade and imparted the invaluable life lessons of farm life on to his sons and treasured insights on to his grandchildren who best loved him as PawPaw. After years of long hours from sunrise to sunset, Lamar decided to change trades and work with his son Jason with Burgans Construction. When daunting projects and looming deadlines presented, Lamar paved the way for a successful completion with his “roll up your sleeves and get it done” outlook. He found reprieve in the great outdoors, and always embraced the opportunity for an afternoon of river fishing and time in the woods. Lamar never failed to muster quality entertainment and a good laugh with his unique
vocabulary. You could count on him to brew up a gourmet “cappatina,” or tune in to the best primetime shows with his “remoke control,” and even bust a little jig when his “knees got to thobbin’ and he had to do the watutsi.” His trademarks were endearing and magnets for charmed bystanders. Lamar made friends at all his stops along his way and was a loyal and valued pal. He was lucky, always finding a favored hand in cards and prosperous streak around the biding table. Lamar, was good people, and for those who knew and loved him, they were lucky too.
Mr. Burgans is survived by his wife of 40 years, Brenda Burgans; sons, Joshua Burgans (Kelsey) and Jason Burgans (Stephanie); grandchildren, Anna Burgans and Layton Burgans; brothers, Willie Burgans (Sybil), Lester Burgans, and Ricky Burgans (Brenda); sisters, Cathy Smith and Sherry Olive (Joe Paul); aunt, Doris Reeves (Short); and brother-in-law, Jerry Harrell (Jan). He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ander and Betty Burgans; parents, Harvey and Ruby Burgans; sisters, Shirley Pate, Patricia Lanham, and Debbie Burgans; and father-and-mother-in-law, Gerald and Norma Harrell.
