Dr. Ottis David Dye died on June 5, 2024, in Troy, Alabama, after a brief illness. David was born on April 29, 1943, in Bruce, Mississippi, to Otis and Celestine Dye. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a BS in Music and received the MFA and PhD in Speech and Theatre from Florida State University. Dr. Dye enjoyed a career as a teacher and administrator at Troy University, where he served as Director and Department Chair in Speech and Theatre and served as Dean of the College of Communication and Fine Arts. A respected scholar and beloved mentor, Dr. Dye garnered state, regional, and national recognition for excellence in teaching, directing, leadership, and contributions to the arts and education. He maintained involvement in the Phi Kappa Phi honor society, serving on the national board. A vital presence in his community, David worked with Habitat for Humanity and was an active and engaged supporter of many efforts, organizations, and individuals. In retirement, David enjoyed gardening and was an energetic participant in Master Gardener activities.

David was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Jim, and a sister, Patricia. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judy; his children, Gwin Elizabeth Jordan and David Ferrell Dye; his grandchildren, Jonathan Jordan, Rowan Jordan, Lily Jordan, and Evan Dye; and his brothers, Lavonne, Gerald, and Roger Dye, and sister, Pam Dye.

Visitation will be held Saturday, June 8, 2024, at 10:30 in the morning at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 401 West College Street, Troy, AL, 36081, followed by interment in the Memorial Garden.

In honor and remembrance of David, memorial gifts may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, The Wounded Warrior Project, or to another preferred charity.
