Nancy Robertson Glaize

January 30, 1925 — February 11, 2025

Troy

Nancy Robertson Glaize left this earth to be with the Lord in the early morning hours of February 11, 2025, just a few days after celebrating her 100th birthday. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, John Maurice Robertson and Lizzie Cole Robertson as well as her husband of 54 years, Chaplain (Lt. Colonel) Charles H. Glaize Sr., USAF. She was blessed to have four children - a daughter, Elizabeth Butler (David) of Troy, AL; Sons - Charles H. Glaize, Jr (Carole) of Virginia Beach, VA; John W. Glaize (Barbara), Kathleen, GA; Edward R. Glaize (Alecia), Boone, NC as well as 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Nancy was born and raised in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. She always loved learning as she was valedictorian of her high school and then graduated with honors from Mary Washington College in 1946 with a degree in English. She taught returning veterans from WW II at the Ferrum Junior College where she met her future husband, who also was a faculty member at the school. After their courtship, Nancy and Charles were married in 1948. Upon his re-entering the military as a chaplain, they began a life together of traveling around the world from the various assignments which ranged from Kentucky, New York, Texas, Delaware, Hawaii, California, Florida, and England. Nancy created a comfortable and loving home for her family in the various places where they were stationed. She also enjoyed welcoming family members who came to visit the sometimes-exotic places where they lived. At each of the bases, Nancy was very active in the Protestant women of the chapel, connecting with other ladies through prayer, Bible study and fellowship.

The family had adventures where they were stationed, sailing around the islands in Hawaii, road trips along the west coast and most notably a six-week camping trip across the continent of Europe. Once her husband completed 30 years of military service, they retired to Mary Esther, Florida, choosing a house within proximity to the Mary Esther United Methodist Church, where the family became very involved. She would often walk to church, where she taught children’s classes, participated in bible studies, the United Methodist Women and eventually lead an adult Sunday school class. Nancy would often make delicacies for church socials and bake sales, that were always very popular.

She was known by family and friends for her delicious home cooking and the sumptuous food she prepared for guests where fun and laughter were had in abundance. The family shared many good meals around the table she set, where memories were made, and love was shared. Nancy took excellent care of her husband Charles for over five years as his health failed. After he died, she lived alone for 15 years, tending her yard, working cross words, reading many books and being active in the church. She eventually moved to Troy, AL to be nearer to her family. After entering the nursing home and needing more attention, wonderful sitters took care of her. The family owes a great debt of gratitude to these women who truly loved “Miss Nancy” to the very end.
