Dr. Melissa Behringer, of Troy, Alabama, passed peacefully surrounded by her family and friends on March 29, 2025, following a brief illness. Born in Columbia, Missouri on January 27, 1965, she lived and attended school in Columbia; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; San Antonio and Abilene, Texas; Biloxi, Mississippi; Montgomery, Alabama; and Tuscaloosa, Alabama where she graduated from Tuscaloosa Academy in 1982. She graduated from the University of Alabama where she met her husband, Stuart Austin, before receiving her Medical Degree at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1991.
Dr. Behringer was a Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician with a focus in OBGYN. She completed her residency at Tuscaloosa Family Practice in 1994 and lived and practiced in Centreville, Alabama. A longtime resident of Huntsville, Alabama, she taught at the UAB-Huntsville’s Family Practice Clinic. She also taught in Selma, Alabama, and most recently lived in Troy, Alabama, where she continued to practice medicine at Southern Health Associates. She was active in the American Medical Association, Medical Association of Alabama, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and was a past President of the Alabama Academy of Family Physicians where she had many colleagues.
Dr. Behringer’s love of medicine and teaching was only eclipsed by her love for her family and her faith. With her husband and her son, Sean, she was an avid traveler taking at least twenty cruise trips and visiting numerous countries and most states on medical conferences and personal vacations. She delighted in taking all of her nephews and nieces to Disney around their 4th birthdays and encouraged (and sometimes paid for) all to travel with her family. She was the oldest of six (6) children of Dr. Blair Rice Behringer and Barbara Nan Behringer.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Morgan Elaine Austin, and her father, the late Dr. Blair Rice Behringer. She is survived by her husband of thirty-seven years, Stuart; her son, Sean; her mother, Barbara Nan; five siblings: Leslie, Cheryl, Cassandra, Brice, and Gregory; and many close friends and colleagues.
