Lowell M. Carter of Troy, AL passed away at age 81 on July 16, 2016 and was welcomed home Saturday morning by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Highly regarded and deeply loved by all who knew him, Lowell served his country, community, and family well.

Born September 3, 1934, Lowell was raised in Pike County by his parents, the late Milton Curtis Carter and Mary Alice Spivey Carter. He served in the United States Army overseas during the Korean Conflict and after in the Army reserves. Lowell received his BS in Ag Education, Masters and AA certification from Auburn University. An educator for 38 years, he taught Agribusiness before he became Director of Vocational Education for both Troy and Pike County schools. He was recognized for 20 years of service to Alabama Agriculture, 20 years of service to the FFA and awarded the Degree of Honorary American Farmer by the National FFA in 1987. Lowell was past president of Rotary International, The American Heart Association and Alabama Vocational Agribusiness Teachers Association.

More than anything, Lowell was a family man with a servant’s heart. He was a loving husband to his wonderful wife, Gaye, a devoted father to his children, Steve, Kim, and Lisa and dearly known as Gdaddy by his 12 grandchildren. With a humor unlike any other and his God given talent and love of music, his joyful heart was contagious. Lowell’s children thank him for teaching them generosity, hard work, character and true love. To his grandchildren, Gdaddy was an example of strength, sharing, and more importantly what it means to love and be loved.  He taught them how to fish, drive a stick shift, root for Auburn and say “War Eagle”.

Lowell and the Carter family tended their family farm and lake, later developing the land and property so that it could be enjoyed by many; teaching us how to share a blessing and turning it into Carter Country Estates, a subdivision.

As music director at Joquin Baptist Church in Goshen for 8 years and then at Southside Baptist Church in Troy for 20 years, he ministered with his music. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the Southside Baptist Church Music Ministry. 522 S. Brundidge St. Troy, AL 36081.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Southside Baptist Church from 9:00 Am until 11:00 AM with Funeral Services immediately following at 11:00 AM with Pastor Andrew Knick officiating. Following the church service, Green Hill’s carriage will transport him to his graveside service in the Green Hills Veterans Garden.

His survivors include; wife of 56 years, Gaye Carter, Troy, children, Steve (Michelle) Carter of  Pell City, Kim Carter (John) Sport of Montgomery, Lisa Carter (Dan) Venable of Franklin, TN., grandchildren, Dane Carter, Grey Carter, Cade Carter, Daniel Venable, Hannah Venable Arick (Andy), Carter Venable, Ellie Venable, Sebastian Venable, Iliana Venable, Stevi Sport Shaw (Kyle), Lacey Rae Sport, Marley Sport. Brother, Herman Carter of Roswell, GA., Sister Jane Nichols of Rainbow City, Twin sister, Lois Stephens of Pensacola, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents Milton and Mary Alice Carter and sister Clara Carter.

Serving as pallbearers will be, Daniel Venable, Dane Carter, Carter Venable, Grey Carter, Cade Carter, Sebastian Venable, John Sport and Dan Venable. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Southside Baptist Church.
