Juanita Mae Searcy (née Hughes) passed away on October 31, 2024, in Birmingham, AL, at the age of 99. Born on September 10, 1925, in Birmingham, AL, she was a cherished member of her community and a beacon of kindness and creativity. Juanita attended Hewitt Trussville High School and continued her education at Howard College in Birmingham, AL. After being widowed in 1962, she furthered her education to become a Medical Technologist. Juanita dedicated many years to heading up the Edge Memorial Hospital Lab in Troy, AL, where her expertise and compassion touched many lives.
She was very active in her communities, attending Troy First Methodist Church, and then Robinson Springs Church in Millbrook, Alabama. Her commitment to faith was reflected in her extensive volunteer work, including roles with RSVP, the Girl Scouts, local libraries, and numerous church-related activities. She was fascinated with all things technical, having assembled several Heathkit electronic projects, an early user of personal computers, and ham radio. Juanita also found great joy in gardening, knitting, sewing, watercolors, weaving, basketry, tatting, leaded glass, and so much more, sharing her creations and skills generously. Most of all, she dearly loved her family.
Juanita is survived by her brother, Donald C. Hughes of Jackson, Tennessee; daughter, Marcia Searcy Mason (David) of Vestavia Hills, AL; grandchildren, Alan L. Mason of Portland, OR, and Sarah Beth Cain (Matt) of Vestavia Hills, AL; great-grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Cain and Matthew Scott Cain, both of Vestavia Hills, AL; along with many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence Edwin Hughes and Myrtle Mae Lincoln Hughes; brothers, Clyde C. Hughes and Lawrence Edwin Hughes, Jr.; husband, Harvey Lee Searcy, Sr.; and son, Harvey Lee Searcy, Jr.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery in Troy, Alabama, with Rev. Steve Winton presiding. A memorial service will take place at Robinson Springs Church, 5980 Main St., Millbrook, Alabama 36054, on Sunday, November 10 at 2:00. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to her favorite charity, Adullam House, 7460 Georgia Rd, Wetumpka, Alabama 36092, in memory of Juanita's lifelong spirit of giving.
Green Hills Funeral Home in Troy, Alabama, is assisting with arrangements, ensuring Juanita is honored with the dignity she deserves.
