Jerry Mancil

September 27, 1940 — January 26, 2021

Jerry L. Mancil, Sr., a lifelong resident of Troy, Alabama, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021. A funeral service will be held Friday, January 29, 2021, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Green Hills Funeral Home with Reverends Daniel Marler and James McVay officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memorial Cemetery with Jeremy Walker, Michael Paul McLendon, John Williams, Richard Barnes, and Scott Henderson serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be Thursday, January 28, 2021, from 4-6 p.m. at Green Hills Funeral Home.

Mr. Mancil lived simply and worked hard. He dedicated 16 years as a carpenter with the Troy Housing Authority until his retirement in 1998. In his newfound time, he rekindled a joy for cooking and loved to stretch his culinary imagination with different recipes and uncommon pairings. Even with all the creative goodness he prepared, his good, old-fashioned chicken spaghetti was long one of his most requested dishes.  Mr. Mancil delighted in the opportunity to cast a line and almost always reaped plenty of rewards for patient fishing. His secret indulgence for WWE wrestling, though, was one he didn’t partake until the passing of his sweet better-half out of respect for her displeasure of the trade. Mr. Mancil was good to his core, strong in his faith, and an admirable example of a husband and father.

Mr. Mancil is survived by his children, Jerry Mancil, Jr. of Clio, Mary Jane Catt of Troy, Willie Jackson McLendon of Clayton, Gloria Faye Johnson (Mark) of Troy, Donald Gerald McLendon of Roten, Ronald Earl McLendon of Banks, Oscar Paul McLendon of Clio, and Linda Sue McLendon (John Williams) of Troy; grandson, Dallas Johnson; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Mary Edna Mancil; daughters, Sherry Lynn Oakes and Peggy Lynn Donaldson; grandchildren, Benjamin McLendon and Melissa Sue Walker; parents, Clem and Beatrice Mancil; brothers, Hermon Mancil and Andy Holmes; sons-in-law, Larry Henderson and Clarence Catt; and daughter-in-law, Margaret McLendon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Glenwood First Assembly of God Church (PO Box 17, Glenwood, AL 36034). Friends and family can sign the guestbook online at www.greenhillsfuneralhome.net. The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Mancil family.
