Jeffrey Thomas Huner passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, after a seventeen-year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Monday, November 25th, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Troy, Alabama, with visitation one hour prior, Father Chris Boutin officiating. Visitation will also be held on Sunday, November 24th, at Green Hills Funeral Home from 3:00 until 5:00pm.
Jeff was born in Troy on December 8, 1967. He attended Troy City Schools, graduating from Charles Henderson High School in 1986, where he excelled in academics and baseball. After two years at Troy State University, he transferred to Auburn University, graduating summa cum laude in Civil Engineering. For the next 33 years, he worked for the Alabama Department of Transportation in Montgomery, retiring due to declining health in June 2024, as the Assistant State Bridge Engineer.
Known to many as “Mr. Fix-It”, Jeff loved his job in the Bridge Bureau. In addition to bridge design, he enjoyed maintaining and improving the bureau’s technology as well as tutoring young engineers and co-workers. On weekends he enjoyed visiting with family and attending Auburn football games to cheer for his beloved Tigers.
Jeff was preceded in death by his grandparents, Aley and Mildred Jeffcoat and Stanley and Mary Huner; his uncle Robert Maddox; and his great nephew, Henry Huner.
As a son, brother, uncle, cousin, co-worker and friend, Jeff was loved and adored by many. Those he leaves behind to carry on his legacy are his parents, Herb and Anne Huner of Troy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Chris and Tracie Huner of Troy and Mike and Alisha Huner of Franklin, TN; nieces and nephews, Brock, Hannah, and Brady Huner of Troy, Seth and Kinsey Huner of Spring Hill, TN, Cole Huner of Franklin, TN, Lt. Jake Huner of Ft. Sill, OK, and Isabella and Trace Cruz of Lynchburg, VA; aunts and uncles, Blake and Peggy Jeffcoat of Montgomery, Stanley and Jane Huner of Sterrett, Mary and Don O'Neil of Beverly Hills, FL, Ricky and Sherene Huner of Eufaula, Sandra Huner and Bobbie Morris of Montgomery, and Theresa Maddox of Weatherford, TX, as well as many cousins with whom he grew up.
Serving as pallbearers are his cousins Scott Huner, Keith Huner, Patrick Huner, Stanley Huner, Richard Huner, and Stuart Jeffcoat. Honorary pallbearers are current and former employees of ALDOT’s Bridge Bureau.
The family will accept flowers, or memorials may be made to St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, or your favorite charity. The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Huner family.
