Edward R. Whaley, passed away July 1, 2013, at his home, surrounded by family. Funeral services for Mr. Whaley were held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2013, at Green Hills Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Hayes and Rev. Clifford Matthews officiating. Dual graveside services will be held for him and his wife of 71 years, Jeanette Beard Whaley, who preceded him in death by three days, on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Whaley was born August 27, 1922, to Lester and Onnie Hildreth Whaley in Coffee County, Alabama. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John W. Whaley and sister, Emma W. Dean. He is survived by his son Robert L. Whaley (Mary); one daughter, Janet W. Campbell (Gene); two granddaughters, Melissa W. Boatner (Ty) and Marsha W. Meeks (Wesley); one grandson, Jason M. Campbell (Cate); four great-grandchildren, Colton and Kristen Meeks and Ava and Max Campbell; sisters, Lundie W. Riddle and Verdie W. Black as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Whaley was a World War II Veteran. He owned and operated Whaley Pecan Co.and Whaley Farm Supply in Troy, Alabama. He served on the Board of Directors of Alfa Insurance, as a director of First Federal Savings & Loan and treasurer of the Pike Pioneer Museum. Mr. Whaley was a member of the First Baptist Church in Troy, where he served through his younger years in several capacities as a deacon, secretary and treasurer, as well as a member of the Baraca sunday school class. He was also a member of the Kawanis Club, served as president of the Alabama Seedmans Association and led as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts.
Memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Pike County Relay for Life/American Cancer Society at 104 Kaye Lane, Troy, AL 36079; or to Hospice Advantage at 199 U.S. Hwy 231, Troy, AL 36081.
