E. Donald Crapps

E. Donald Crapps, of Troy, Alabama, died October 22, 2014.  Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at 3:00 pm at First United Methodist Church of Troy.  The family will receive friends at Green Hills Funeral Home on Saturday, October 25, 2014 from 2-4 p.m.  Officiating at the service will be Rev. Steve Winton assisted by Dr. Bryan Edwards.  Mr. Crapps was born on November 3, 1929 in West Columbia, SC.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Talbert E. and Iva Busbee Crapps, three brothers and one sister, all of West Columbia, SC and son, Gary, of Troy.  He is survived by his wife, Lyra Nabors Crapps of Troy, Alabama; five nephews and one niece; six grand nephews, two grand nieces and numerous great grand nephews and nieces all of Lexington County, SC; one daughter, Karen Peifer (Mel), and granddaughter, Tressa Peifer of Seattle, WA.  He graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School, Cayce, SC, Columbia Commercial College, North Greenville College, Furman University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the University of Alabama.  He also attended the University of Florida and did doctorial studies at the University of Georgia.  He served as Youth Minister at First Baptist Church of West Columbia, SC; Assistant Pastor at First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach, SC; Baptist Campus Minister at Troy State University; Counselor and Director of Counseling at Troy State University; Guidance Counselor at Orange Park High School in Orange Park, FL; Dean of Students at North Greenville College, Tigerville, SC; and Asst. Professor of Psychology and Counselor at Clayton State College, Morrow, GA.  He served in many volunteer positions during his life.  He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Metro Atlanta Mental Health Association, founding president of the Mental Health Association of Clayton County, GA, two terms as President of the Mental Health Association of Georgia, member of the Georgia Governor’s Council on Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse, and chair of the Regional Board for MH, MR, and SA in Georgia and charter member of the Clayton County Arts, Council of Clayton County, GA.  After his retirement in Troy, he served as president of the Troy Music Study Club and the Kiwanis Club of Troy, member of the Quality Assurance Committee for Children Protective Services for DHR, member of the Farm City Committee, the Jean Lake and TroyFest Committees and was president of the Troy Arts Council for nine years.  He was honored by the Governor of Alabama and the Alabama State Council on the Arts for his contributions to the arts in Troy, Pike County, and the State of Alabama.  He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Troy.  Active pallbearers will be Bert Crapps, Jerry (Bill) Crapps, Ricky Crapps, Ronnie Crapps, Ronnie Crapps, Jr., Randy Crapps, Benji Hallman, Dennis Wilson and Jason Bruce.  Honorary pallbearers will be the New Covenant SS Class, BSU Alumni, Delta Chi Alumni, Troy Music Study Club members, Virginia, Jerry and Carol Spurlock, John Dick Barr and Dr. and Mrs. John Long.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Troy Music Study Club Scholarship Fund, the Troy Arts Council Scholarship Fund, Box 606, Troy, AL 36081 or the Chancel Choir Scholarship Fund of First United Methodist Church in Troy.  Family and friends can sign the guest book at greenhillsfuneralhome.net.  The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Crapps family.
