Dorothy Elizabeth Carter (Herrington) was born on Dec. 25, 1920 to Rev James & Annie Carter in Huntington, WVA. She was raised in Middletown, Ohio until the family migrated to Philadelphia, PA. She met Elmo Herrington of Chester, PA, and was married Nov. 25, 1940.
Dorothy started her employment with Chester Hospital in 1942 as a tray girl and was later promoted to Supervisor in the Dietary Department. She remained in this capacity when Chester hospital merged with Crozer, and became Crozer-Chester Medical Center. In 1970 she completed her studies and was bonded in Respiratory Therapy. She remained in that capacity until her retirement in 1982. During this time she resided in Chester, PA until the passing of her husband Elmo in the year 2000. She then relocated to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Lamont and Tamara Herrington.
Dorothy was very active in the community of Chester. She was president of the Who’s Who social organization. Dorothy was also very active in Calvary Baptist Church and was president of the Deaconesses among other duties. When relocating to Troy, Al. she was baptized in Jesus name and became an active participant in the church there, known as the Fountain of Life Church.
After marrying Elmo she became the mother of Kenneth and Yvonne Herrington (four and five years of age) and loved them as her own. Later, in 1947, she gave birth to Lamont.
Lifeway Ministries has lost a mother in Zion and was affectionately known by all as Mother Herrington. One thing the membership will never forget is her cooking and especially her cakes which always graced our camp meetings as long as she was able.
She is preceded in passing by her husband Elmo, son Kenneth and daughter, Yvonne.
She leaves behind one son, Rev. Lamont and daughter in law, Tamara. Also grandsons: Wesley Herrington, Nathan Herrington, Ernie Towns, and Craig Herrington. Granddaughters: Eleyce Herrington, Debbie Dix, Cheryl Towns, Maria and Lisa. Daughters-in-law: Unjalae and Jovan Herrington, and a host of great grandchildren, church members and friends.
Our hearts are broken, but our love never will be.
