Clavin Sunday

November 9, 1931 — February 3, 2021

Clavin Sunday, age 89, a longtime resident of Troy, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2021. A graveside service will be held Friday, February 5, 2021, at 1 p.m. at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery with Reverend Craig Holmes and Pastor John Milton officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Matt Floyd, Tyler Gates, Daniel Groomes, Josh Hamm, Jamie Hill, and Steve Gates. Honorary pallbearers will be Hunter Barker, Noah Barker, Jay Hill, and Cooper Hill. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Green Hills Funeral Home.

You might have seen her, Mrs. Sunday, a familiar face around town. And if you did, then you absolutely heard her. She was never without words, as there was always a tale to tell, or newsworthy chatter, or an opinion that needed to be shared. Mrs. Sunday was a valuable source of credible information. She was born in Glenwood, Alabama, and called home to some of the corners of Crenshaw and Pike Counties around the Goshen and Petrey communities throughout her childhood. In those rural parts, Mrs. Sunday learned quickly the value of good communication. She travelled a bit, raising children across the states as a military wife, but loved most returning to her roots to call Troy home. She was a valued clerical assistant with the Department of Transportation for more than 30 years and an active member and participant with various social and civic groups in town. Most notable were her memberships with the Homemakers’ Club and the Pilot Club, her study with the Women’s Group Sunday school class, and her contribution as a founding member of God’s Way Baptist Church. Not to be fooled by her sweet nickname either, “Nanny” was a fierce dominoes blocker, passionate puzzle solver, and no-kind of cook in the kitchen. Nanny was independent, tough, and unfiltered—a trio that often warranted the phrase, “you gotta love her.” And people did, for all of her that was real and pure. She was, as they say, the word…bird.

Mrs. Sunday is survived by her children, Connie Floyd (Ray W.), Sherry Kelly (Steve), Vicki Simpler, Cindy Gates (Steve), and Roger Groomes (Tawnya); 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters, Liz Boyd and Sylvia Grissett; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Sunday; grandson, Ray Wilkes Floyd; great-grandsons, Eli Hill and infant Joshua Hamm; father, Leo Sikes; mother, Myrtle Sikes Knox; sister, Carolyn Sikes; and brother, Bill Sikes.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her honor to God’s Way Baptist Church (1100 Elba Highway, Troy, AL 36079). Friends and family can sign the guestbook online at www.greenhillsfuneralhome.net. The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Sunday family.
