Cecil Max Hughes

April 21, 1938 — October 11, 2024

Troy, Alabama

Cecil “Max” Hughes, age 86, a lifelong resident of Pike County, Alabama, passed away Friday, October 11, 2024. A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Brian Dovey officiating.

Mr. Max learned early on in his days the importance of meaningful relationships, hard work, and good communication. After all, growing up with eight brothers and sisters didn’t come easy and sibling survival often required quite a bit of finesse. His always-poised-presence easily could have been an inherit trait, but more likely, a well-cultivated skill that would carry him through his years. He had a mind for mechanics and put his curiosity to work during high school under the hoods at Phil Adams Motors. He went on to graduate from Troy High School Class of 1954 and found a position with the Goodyear Tire Company. Around the same time, he enlisted with the Alabama National Guard to which he dedicated 30 years of honorable service.

Mr. Max was a thinker, savvy, and diligent. He kept his nose to the grindstone, paid careful attention to the details of successful businesses, and forged a path to his own entrepreneurship. When his passion for trucks and mindset for logistics collided, Max Hughes Trucking was born and became a notable fleet blazing the roads. Mr. Max wasn’t just a boss or businessman; he was an investor and a mentor. He invested in the connections with his employees, mentored likeminded and aspiring young professionals, and fostered a great sense of comradery with folks in the community. It’s been thought to give credit to Mr. Max for initiating the highly regarded “Monday Men’s Night Out” where good men gathered for good food to talk about all the good stuff and share a few chuckles and grins. And he held a longstanding seat at the Julia’s Restaurant notorious round table where hot coffee was sipped and matters of the world were contemplated.

Work fueled him and family fulfilled him. Mr. Max was generous and kind and doting and, most always, agreeable. He knew the secret to peace and prosperity on the home front was to keep Mrs. Margrette happy, no matter what. His love was steadfast and pure and will forever linger in the hearts most dear to him. His thoughtful counsel will be cherished and felt like a warm hug during times of tribulation. And hopefully, his distinct legacy can serve as an exemplary model for how to be a fine gentleman – to be one of the good ones.

Mr. Hughes is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Margrette Hughes; children, Connie Campbell (Ken) and Kenny Hughes (Holly); grandchildren, Casey Campbell Moore (Don), Sam Campbell (Whitney); Kenzie Hughes, Cassady Hughes, J.C. Peacher, and Chandler Peacher; great-grandson, Campbell Moore; and sisters, Helen Ricks, Janice West, and Jane Hughes.

Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be made in his honor to the Park Memorial Methodist Church General Fund (750 Elba Hwy., Troy, AL 36079).
