Mrs. Casandra King-Awkard was born October 24, 1954, to the late Ms. Essie Mae King and Mr. Jake Youngblood. She attended Charles Henderson High School and graduated with the class of 1972. Shortly after graduating high school, she joined the United States Navy, and later the United States Army. She served her country faithfully until she was honorably discharged.
During her time in the military, Casandra met her husband, Mr. Erskine Lewis Awkard of Afton, Virginia. During this union they produced one child, Mr. Terrence Kyron Awkard. Casandra and Erskine were married for over 27 years until his untimely death in 2007. Casandra was diagnosed with the later stages of lung cancer in 2010 and battled with her illness until the early morning on April 29, 2012, where she was finally given eternal rest.
Casandra was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings: Mrs. Julia Mae (Toosie) Johnson, Mr. Donald Frank King and Mrs. Gussie Mae Youngblood Smith. Precious memories are cherished by a loving, devoted son, Terrence (Candice) Awkard. Her siblings: Mrs. Annie Bell Starks of Troy, AL; Mrs. Mary Louise Gay and Mrs. Essie Mae McGhee of Panama City, FL; Mrs. Ann Massy of Bessemer, AL; Mrs. Pearlie Mae Thomas and Ms. Dejerilyn King Henderson of Troy, AL; Mr. Tommy Louis (Cathlene) King of Dothan, AL. As well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Special relatives include: Veronica Johnson, Juretha Thomas, Sabrina Thomas, Yvonne Starks and Jacquez Pryor.
